BERLIN: The German Football Association (DFB) announced on Tuesday that they plan to meet with outgoing Bayern Munich coach Hansi Flick (pix) to become the replacement for national team boss Joachim Loew after Euro 2020.
Flick will leave the reigning German champions at the end of the season after asking Bayern to be released from his contract, RB Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann named as his successor.
“It is well known that Hansi Flick is held in high regard by the federation. We can confirm that, in this context, we will now also discuss with him and Bayern officials, ”said a spokesperson for the DFB. AFP subsidiary company SID.
“For the moment, we will no longer comment on the rest of the procedure, which we will coordinate internally first with all parties concerned, with all the necessary care and calm,” added the spokesperson.
Flick won the Bundesliga and German Cup last season and added the Champions League and his side could win the German title again early next month, but his relationship with powerful Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic , has deteriorated due to the transfer policy.
The 56-year-old is seen as the German FA’s first choice to succeed Loew, who is set to step down after the European Championship after 15 years at the helm.
The DFB had repeated several times in recent weeks that it was not going to approach a coach still under contract, and had ruled out paying any compensation to a club.
Flick was Loew’s assistant between 2006 and 2014, helping Germany win the World Cup in Brazil. He then worked as a sports director for the DFB. – AFP
