MANILA, Philippines – Gilas Pilipinas could play in the PBA Philippine Cup this season and the national team are expected to make eight to ten appearances – if plans come to fruition.
The possibility still depends on the national team’s training schedule and the opening dates of the All-Filipino Cup, which is scheduled for late May or early June.
“We even want the team to be a regular competitor who can one day be the champion,” PBA commissioner Willie Marcial said on the league’s Filipino website.
“It always depends on their practices and their overall program, and it may include training abroad.
The inclusion of Gilas in the upcoming Philippine Cup is the league’s way to help nationals prepare for the Fiba Asia Cup qualifiers and the Olympic qualifying tournament.
If he plans to continue, Gilas will play in the triple header curtain raisers in tune-up matches against PBA clubs.
This was not the first time the Philippine national team have played in the PBA as a guest team as Gilas 1 entered the 2009-10 Philippine Cup with a 3-6 record.
It was in the 1980s, however, that the national team had the most success when the Philippine NCC team led by Ron Jacobs took third place before winning the 1985 Reinforced Conference.
