Champions League as it happened: Paris St-Germain humiliated by Manchester City’s return

Manchester City won 2-1 in Paris against PSG

FULL TIME: PSG 1 CITY 2 City have one last effort and Navas knocks back a De Bruyne shot for a corner. But this is it. What a turnaround in City’s second half. A brilliant 45-minute second puts the English champions on the lookout for one game of their very first Champions League final. Thanks for following. See you next week.

PSG 1 CITY 2: Surprisingly, Gundogan continues to play after this horror tackle. Neymar twists again but is equally incredibly capable of popping up and taking the resulting free kick.

PSG 1 CITY 2: Foden slices PSG defense but sends his shot directly to Navas

PSG 1 CITY 2: Can City kill this with another goal against 10 men? They push and Mahrez and Foden both come closer. It’s a huge chance for City now, and I admit I didn’t see it coming at all.

PSG 1 CITY 2: It’s horrible to see now as Idrissa Gueye appears to have nibbled on Ilkay Gundogan’s leg. The PSG man is quickly sent off but the City player is in real trouble.

GOAL! PSG 1 CITY 2: What a turnaround. Mahraz contradicts the PSG defense as they all had their eyes on De Bruyne before a free kick just outside the box. In the cheeky winger bites and he splits the wall and lets Navas scream at his defenders. Wowzers.

PSG 1 CITY 1 OBJECTIVE: As far as Kevin De Bruyne’s goals go, it’s so poor (jokingly). The Belgian looks up without pressure and has a pop. She walks into the lower corner as Navas stares. That’s your away goal and all of a sudden City takes over.

PSG 1 CITY 0: De Bruyne almost has a moment of magic as he connects with an excellent cross from Foden, but his overhead effort goes just over the bar.

PSG 1 CITY 0: Ederson is smart out of his line to clear as PSG launch another attack on a couther. Still in the balance as it is.

PSG 1 CITY 0: Better to start this time out of City, but there is a sense of frustration as every referee decision seems to go against them. De Bruyne has a word with referee Felix Brych. Right after PSG had a golden chance to do two but Veratti is inches away.

Kick-off – PSG 1 CITY 0: So here we are again. Did a Guardiola rocket fix the boys in town to get back to their normal game? We will see.

HALF TIME – PSG 1 CITY 0: Guardiola’s men can’t really complain as they have so far been properly led in Paris.

PSG 1 CITY 0: Better luck so far for City as Foden aims from a distance, but Navas is right behind him.

PSG 1 CITY 0: Neymar is ridiculous now. I’ve given it the benefit of the doubt in its taxiing so far, but it crumbles like it’s Russia 2018 (Cue Neymar falling to this comment).

PSG 1 CITY 0: City continue to probe when the ball enters PSG’s half of the pitch, but there is still nothing up front.

PSG 1 CITY 0: A half-chance for City is stifled and Neymar and Mbappe are back on the attack, bringing out a block of walker gratis and a slice of heart in their mouths after the post.

PSG 1 CITY 0: City are certainly not used to not having dominance in possession and PSG seem the most likely to add to the score. It could be a difficult night for visitors.

PSG 1 CITY 0: City continues the game and begins to play their keepball game which has served them so well. But PSG slams on its heels at every opportunity.

PSG 1 CITY 0: Thus, City and Guardiola have their work cut out for them, because they have been on their backs. They did well last time around against Dortmund. Can they show their character again?

GOAL! PSG 1 CITY 0: And the pressure says it. Another turn and Marquinhos puts his head on the skipper’s cross. Nobody marks it.

PSG 0 CITY 0: Wow! And the game comes to life as PSG test the city’s defense with a hopeful shot from a corner before Neymar forces Ederson into a one-handed athletic save. The Brazilian striker is well placed for this one.

PSG 0 CITY 0: As expected, a provisional departure from both sides, but PSG slightly limited the first exchanges.

PSG 0 CITY 0: City don’t get their usual dominance, but they start making inroads to the right through Mahrez.

PSG 0 CITY 0: Animated departure of PSG while Neymar tests Ederson. But Kyle Walker took the spur of the attempt and it was an easy catch for the Brazilian keeper.

PSG 0 CITY 0: We are operational. Hang on to your hats!

PSG v CITY: The teams are out and we are ready to go. The stake of the first leg and the story will take place in 180 minutes: consecutive finals for PSG or first visit for City. The image will be (a little) brighter in about two hours.

PSG v CITY: 15 minutes before kick-off in Paris and for the moment the sky seems clear, so little chance of the downpour last night.

PSG v CITY: It’s still not a bad bench for City to appeal if needed. Five submarines allowed in the Champions League, remember …

PSG v CITY: The big boost for PSG is that Kylian Mbappe rocked – à la Taylor Swift – a dead leg he picked up this weekend and which will start for the French champions. No room for Raheem Sterling in the city’s starting XI – with Silva, Foden and Mahrez kicking off – interesting that of Guardiola ….

Paris Saint Germain: Keylor Navas; Alessandro Florenzi, Marquinhos (captain), Presnel Kimpembe, Mitchel Bakker; Leandro Paredes, Marco Verratti, Idrissa Gueye; Angel Di Maria, Kylian Mbappe, Neymar
Manchester City: Ederson; Kyle Walker, Ruben Dias, John Stones, Joao Cancelo; Ilkay Gundogan, Rodri, Kevin De Bruyne (captain); Riyad Mahrez, Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden

PSG v CITY: Both sides are gunnel stacked with class. PSG have Di Maria, Mbappe and Neymar, Icardi, Rafinha and Navas. City can count on Sterling, Jesus and Foden, De Bruyne, Gundogan and Ederson. It’s hard to say which direction this will go but it is guaranteed to be a cracker (hopefully).

“It will definitely have goals. Last night’s game was marred a bit by the heavy rains, but I’m sure we’re in a bad spot,” said Craig Leader, manager at Crown & Lion Byblos Barsha Heights. “Although Chelsea have a chance in the second leg, it could be over in the first leg – anyway …”

PSG v CITY: PSG were last year’s semi-finalists, losing to Bayern Munich in the delayed coronavirus showdown in Portugal. But this is new territory for City under Guardiola, having never moved beyond the quarters under their tutelage in five years – until now.

PSG v CITY: I have a feeling you won’t be able to look away from this one for a minute tonight as both teams are ready for a full attack right off the bat.

PSG against CITY

We had drama in the Flood last night as Real Madrid and Chelsea drew 1-1 in their Champions League semi-final first leg.
