Balmain Tigers’ great Ben Elias and a financially backed consortium have reportedly held secret meetings to discuss buying a controlling stake in the struggling Wests Tigers for up to $ 10 million.
The Daily Telegraph reports, Elias and a group of Sydney businessmen performed due diligence on a property proposal.
According to the report, Elias arranged to discuss his plan with Wests Tigers power brokers early next week.
It is understood that an offer could be made quickly, pending approval from the NRL, if the Tigers express an interest.
“I can confirm that. It’s a work in progress, but obviously it’s very early. But I won’t comment further,” Elias told the Daily Telegraph.
Elias and the consortium are looking to buy a 50.5% stake in the club, which could cost between $ 8 million and $ 10 million.
Elias played 234 games with the Balmain Tigers between 1982-1994.
