Dubai: History beckons the internationally renowned Godolphin team of Dubai in the 147th Kentucky Derby, America’s most famous race, which takes place in its traditional home at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

Essential Quality, a Godolphin bred by Tapit, will offer His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, an elusive debut success in the 10-furlong Classic which is often referred to as “The most exciting two minutes” of sport.

Unbeaten in five career starts, Essential Quality will look to become the 52nd seed to win the Derby and will also give the Eclipse Prize and senior North American manager Brad Cox a first victory in the race in his first appearance.

Essential Quality is part of a field of up to 20 horses that will compete for a $ 3 million purse with other imaginary contenders, including the undefeated Rock Your World of Florida Derby scorer John Sadler (5-1). by Todd Pletcher’s Known Agenda (6-1) and Hot Rod Charlie (8-1), Doug O’Neill’s victory in the Louisiana Derby, second behind Essential Quality at the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Mile last November.

Essential Quality will be ridden by Panamanian jockey Luis Suarez, best remembered for his exploits aboard the 2020 Saudi Cup winner Maximum Security.

Looking ahead to what could be a historic day for Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin stable and for himself, Brad Cox put things in perspective when he told the Godolphin site: “My only concern with Essential Quality is to have a good trip. I think if he runs the race he did, he will be there.

“It’s a 20 horse field, so you have to overcome certain things and be lucky in the race. If he has the chance to run and a clean trip, we should be in a great position. “

“He hasn’t missed a beat in his career. He’s run five big races and his work schedule has been extremely consistent so he’s a very solid horse in terms of strength, ”added Cox, 41, who is keen to become the first Louisville native to win the Derby.

“He’s happy and feels great but he’s a stylish horse who knows when to turn it on and off. I think it’s a good quality to have a Derby horse.” It’s going to be loud with a big crowd on Derby Day, but we are hopeful and confident that he will be able to handle it.

Winning the Kentucky Derby, Cox said, “It would be the greatest thing we have done, and the greatest thing you can accomplish in this business.

“It’s been a long time. We paid our dues and that put us in this situation. We are grateful for the customer base and the help we have that has given us this opportunity. “
