Ryan Pessoa, aka Hashtag Ryan, is one of the best FIFA players in the world. He has signed with the Hashtag United esports team, and he is also an official Red Bull athlete.
I have played FIFA against him before. “Pretty solid” and “really decent” were the phrases he used to describe my game, as he hit my goalie three times in quick succession. I’m pretty sure he was going that easy with me too.
Pessoa was at Red Bull Gaming Sphere in London last week to host a FIFA 19 workshop where he would answer questions and provide his best tips and tricks for the new game. Luckily, I didn’t have to embarrass myself. by playing with him again.

He’s gone over everything from custom tactics to offense, defense to set pieces.
Instead, I met him before he went live on the stream. There are a lot of new changes to FIFA this year, although they might not be immediately obvious. I asked him to give me an overview of the most important new features in FIFA 19.
“The first thing to do is practice the timed finish,” he tells me. “ It adds an element to shooting that was never in the game before. ”
In FIFA 19, if you press the fire button to start power up, then press the button again the fraction of a second before your player hits the ball, you will get bonus accuracy and power. At first you will literally have to watch your player’s bar or leg as it moves towards the ball. But Pessoa says you will eventually succeed.
“The first thing I did was go into amateur difficulty and just train and practice. The game has only been out for a few weeks, but it already has hundreds of games under its belt.
The old attack tricks also work. The finesse kick is still very good (hold in RB / R1), and in the ramp-up you can use the same tactics as last year. While on the ball, you can run one of your close players (L1 / LB). If you quickly press the button to bring them back from the run (R1 / RB), a huge gap widens, left by the defender accompanying him. It’s pretty easy to make room and progress on the pitch that way.

Control the goalkeeper
The next new thing is the ability to manually control your goalie using the right stick.
“ If they cut inside they’re probably going to shoot in the face of the goal, so practice moving your goalie. However, Pessoa also notes that good players will know that you will move your keeper in situations like these and shoot the other way around. Just like on the real court, scoring a goal is often a matter of witticism and unpredictability.
Then put the pieces in place. In FIFA 19 so far, this is where matches can be won.
“I scored more corners than penalties, getting a corner is basically a penalty,” said Pessoa.
Turns out if you can break free at the near post, corners are almost impossible to defend. The headers are viable, but surprisingly Pessoa typically opts for a bike kick by holding the left trigger and pressing the fire button. During the stream, he showed clips of this in action, and it works a surprisingly high percentage of the time.
New features this year include the timed finish and the ability to manually move your goalie
When it comes to defense, you better let the game do that for you. “If you control your center-backs you’ll be in trouble,” Pessoa said. Instead, you have to control your defensive midfielders and try to manually cut the passing lanes. If you have a quick attacking midfielder, you can even bring him back for more support. You can leave the rest to the AI.
The question of who to put in your Ultimate Team is always on the minds of FIFA players. We’re just at the start of the new game, so no team is at the top yet. However, Pessoa’s is already well advanced, with icons like Rio Ferdinand and Frank Rijkaard in defense and Kylian Mbappe on the wing.
He has 30 wins out of 30 matches in the FIFA 19 Premier Weekend League, and tells me next on his shopping list are the Patrick Vieira and Ruud Gullit Icon cards.
This year he wants to win everything, he tells me he has had a disappointing year in terms of results with FIFA 18, but it hasn’t killed his passion. In fact, he’s hungrier than ever. “Right now the fuel for me to be successful in FIFA is unprecedented, I would be shocked if anyone has the same fire as me.”
With the announcement of the ePremier League and more and more FIFA tournaments, there has never been a better time to try to be successful in FIFA esports. Ryan Pessoa will be competing at the top, and if you put in the time, maybe you can too.
