Maradona was left to ‘fate’ before death: a panel of experts

BUENOS AIRES: Argentinian football icon Diego Maradona (pix) received inadequate medical care and was left to fend for a “prolonged and agonizing period” before dying last year, a panel of medical experts concluded on Friday.

In a 70-page document, the panel said that Maradona, who died of a heart attack on November 25 at the age of 60, “started dying at least 12 hours before” when he was found. dead in bed.

Maradona died just weeks after undergoing brain surgery on a blood clot.

A group of 20 experts was convened by Argentina’s prosecutor to examine the cause of death and determine whether there had been negligence.

Maradona’s neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov and psychologist Carlos Diaz are under investigation, along with two nurses, a nurse coordinator and a medical coordinator.

The finding could result in a wrongful death case and a prison sentence of up to 15 years if convicted.

The legal proceedings were sparked by a complaint filed by two of Maradona’s five daughters against Luque, who they blamed for their father’s deteriorating state of health after the brain surgery.

Maradona underwent surgery on November 3, just four days after celebrating his 60th birthday at the club he coached, Gimnasia y Esgrima.

However, he was in poor health by then and had difficulty speaking. – AFP
