KUALA LUMPUR: Second-tier AFC Cup group stage matches for Eastern Zone clubs have been postponed to June due to challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) said on Monday.
Group J matches were originally scheduled to be held in Hong Kong May 14-20, but will now be played June 23-29.
“The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has accepted the Hong Kong Football Association’s (HKFA) proposal to postpone Group J matches in the East Zone of the AFC Cup,” AFC said in a statement. .
“The decision was confirmed, taking into account the lingering challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and allowing more time to ensure optimal delivery of matches.”
Group J includes Athletic 220 from Mongolia, Eastern Long Lions from Hong Kong and Lee Man as well as Tainan City from Taiwan.
The 2020 AFC Cup was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic when quarantine regulations in many countries made international travel nearly impossible. – Reuters
