Rangers respond to Tom Wilson punch that sparked brawl: ‘zero respect’

The Rangers held nothing back after another incident with Tom Wilson.

In the second period of Wednesday night’s Rangers-Capitals game, the controversial Capitals winger nailed a lying Pavel Buchnevich to the back of the head during a stoppage of play.

The play sparked a massive brawl between Wilson and Rangers players, with Wilson grabbing an Artemi Panarin helmet by the hair and slamming it on the ice. Wilson’s conduct resulted in a misconduct penalty of 10 minutes.

Rangers head coach David Quinn and other New York players responded to Wilson’s play after last night’s game.

Said Quinn:

We have all seen it. There are lines that cannot be crossed in this game. There is just no respect for the game in general. You now have one of the star players in this league who could have been seriously injured in this incident. You have all seen what happened, and it happens time and time again with him. Totally unnecessary.

Rangers star Mika Zibanejad also intervened.

I thought you should have a little more respect for the game and for the players. Honestly, I don’t know where to start. It’s just awful. Zero respect. I don’t know why I’m surprised. It’s just awful.

The Capitals official Twitter account also tweeted an image in the wake of the brawl, but it was quickly deleted.

Rangers star Artemi Panarin has been ruled out for the remainder of the game (and season) following kerfuffle with a lower body injury.

Wilson has a history of suspensions in the league, gaining notoriety as one of the dirtiest players in the NHL. Now we’ll see if the NHL decides to grant him his fifth suspension.
