Olympic swimmer Cate Campbell reveals how she stays motivated

The sport is full of redemption stories and Cate Campbell just got her chance to write her own chapter on the subject at the Tokyo Olympics.

The champion swimmer just finished competing at the Australian Swimming Trials in Adelaide, and if you watched live or on Amazon Prime Video you would have seen her finish a mighty runner-up in the 100m freestyle final, securing her place in the team headed for Japan.

Just making Tokyo is enough to ensure Campbell will be remembered as one of the greatest of all time – being just one of three swimmers to qualify for four Olympics.

“Most people do it once in their lifetime and here I am, almost 30 years old, making it my fourth,” she says.

But this is only the beginning of his story of redemption. See, in Rio, Campbell – a favorite for the gold medal – finished sixth in the final. This year, however, she wants to change that.

His secret weapon? His iron will and the kind of relentless drive that can move mountains.

“Motivation is not a feeling, it’s an action,” she says.

“If I waited until I wanted to go to training, I would probably only go three times a week. Instead, when my alarm clock goes off in the morning, even though I don’t feel like getting out of bed, I do it anyway.

“By the time I get into training I generally feel a lot better. Don’t wait until you feel something before doing it, start with a small task – like getting out of bed – and let the momentum of that action take you to a more motivated state. “

It’s no secret that it will be an Olympic Games like no other. Delayed, almost canceled, and with

training programs for athletes plunged into absolute chaos, the preparations were more than difficult, they were almost impossible.

But Campbell also took it all in his nearly 1.9m stride, saying 2020 has taught him that sometimes you have to ditch even the best-laid plans.

“I have definitely learned to deal with uncertainty. I’m generally a very goal-oriented person who thrives on plans and routines. Well, the plans and routines have been completely thrown out the window, ”she says.

“For a while I felt really lost and confused. I had to learn that this wasn’t something I could fix, and once I accepted that fact, I found creative ways to stay fit and be entertained. “

Win in the morning

“I try to go to bed at a regular time every night. It helps my body get into a good routine and my quality of sleep is much better. I also try to have one morning a week where I allow myself to sleep – or if I can’t sleep, at least stay in bed until around 8 in the morning. Giving yourself permission to rest is as important as pushing yourself to achieve your goals. “

To stay attentive

“I find reading a good book a form of mindfulness. It requires enough mental activity to keep my mind from wandering, but is relaxing enough to help let go of my stress. I’m always on the lookout for new book recommendations. “

The power of the ocean

“There is something magical about immersing yourself in salt water. I often take snorkeling equipment and it’s like being given a portal to another universe. There is so much life just below the surface of the ocean, and I love getting lost in another world. “
