Defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning oust Isles to face Canadiens in final

Forward Yanni Gourde scored a shorthanded goal and Andrei Vasilevskiy recorded his fourth shutout of the playoffs as the Tampa Bay Lightning booked their spot in the Stanley Cup final with a 1-0 win over the Islanders from New York.

Vasilevskiy blocked 18 shots for his fifth career shutout in the playoffs and a fourth in the playoffs as defending champion Lightning edged the Islanders in Game 7 on Friday.

The Lightning will now face the Montreal Canadiens in the NHL Top Seven series, which begins Monday in Florida.

“They’re going to get the best team they’ve played against so far, and we’re going to get the best team we’ve played against so far,” Lightning forward Steven Stamkos said of the Habs.

Tampa Bay have now won 14 straight games after a playoff loss, which says a lot about their ability to bounce back from a loss.

Head coach Jon Cooper and his players took nothing for granted in their bid to become the first repeat champions since the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2016 and 2017.

“I like the way our team reacted in the playoffs after the losses,” said Cooper.

Vasilevskiy was instrumental in their success, earning a shutout in each of Tampa Bay’s last four wins, including Game 6 of last year’s Stanley Cup Final against Dallas.

The Lightning have dominated the Islanders 9-0 in their last two home games. They lost Game 6 to New York 3-2 in overtime, in a series that featured five games decided by a single goal.

Gourde scored early in the second period as the Islanders took advantage of the power play. He charged off the bench and took a pass from teammate Anthony Cirelli into the lunge and blasted a receiving shot from Islanders goaltender Semyon Varlamov for the lone goal.

Varlamov stopped 30 shots for the Islanders, which were knocked out by the Lightning in the last four for the second year in a row.

The Islanders were hoping to reach the Stanley Cup final for the first time since 1984, when their four-game winning streak was shattered by the Edmonton Oilers.

Tampa’s Brayden Point ended his nine-game streak. He came close to matching the NHL record set by Reggie Leach, who scored in 10 straight playoff games with the Philadelphia Flyers in 1976.
