London [UK], July 4 (ANI): Crystal Palace Football Club confirmed the appointment of Patrick Vieira as the new manager for the next three seasons on Sunday.
“I am really delighted to have this opportunity to come back to the Premier League and manage this great football club, as we start a new chapter together,” said Patrick Vieira in an official statement.
“It’s a project that really appeals to me, because I have spoken a lot with the president and the sporting director about their ambition and their plans for the whole club, including the Academy. The club has foundations. fantastic in place after many years in the Premier League, and I hope we can make further improvements and keep the club moving forward.I am also very happy to experience the atmosphere that the club’s supporters are creating at Selhurst Park and away, and I know how important that can be for the team, ”he added.
Considered one of the best players of his generation, Vieira played a pivotal role in Arsenal’s domestic success between 1997 and 2005 under Arsene Wenger, winning three Premier League titles and four FA Cups. He has represented the North London club 396 times and has been named the PFA Premier League Team of the Year for six consecutive years.
After leaving Arsenal, the midfielder spent a season at Juventus, before getting more money at Inter Milan (three Serie A titles and two Supercoppa Italiana triumphs) and Manchester City (a win in the FA Cup) where he ended a remarkable playing career in 2011.
Internationally, Vieira made more than 100 appearances for France over a 12-year span, including several stints as captain, winning the 1998 FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Championship. in 2000.
After hanging up, Vieira began his transition to coaching at Manchester City Academy, embarking on a four-year management apprenticeship that included a period of managing the club’s elite development team.
He left City for the United States and the 2016 Major League Soccer season, taking over the management role of New York City FC, which had finished 17th the previous season. He led them to second in the Eastern Conference in its debut season, with the team finishing fourth overall. The following season, another second place in the Eastern Conference was secured and Vieira’s team finished second overall in the league.
Vieira then returned to France to manage Ligue 1 club Nice in 2018, securing a seventh place in his debut season – one more place than their previous campaign. In 2019/20, Vieira’s side placed fifth in a shortened season securing a place in the Europa League. (ANI)
