Lachlan Coote played a starring role as St Helens piled more misery on Wigan Warriors with a 24-6 win in the Betfred Super League derby on Sunday.

Coote, who earlier this week was linked with a move to Hull Kingston Rovers next season, was instrumental as the Saints dominated the opening 40 minutes, putting on the kick that led Regan Grace to try to cross for one of his own, as well as giving two kicks. conversions and three penalties.

Yellow cards on either side of the break for Kai Pearce-Paul and Willie Isa left Wigan temporarily at 11 men as well, with Mark Percival pushing the hosts further with a try on his return to the side.

The second half became more and more disjointed in torrential rain, but nothing stopped St Helens from gaining the upper hand over their former rivals and Liam Farrell’s converted score brought little consolation to Wigan, who suffered his fifth straight loss.
