What can Bangladesh cricket fans expect from Herath and Prince?
Posted On July 4, 2021
The Bangladesh team arrived in Zimbabwe on Wednesday June 30 to play a bilateral series that included Tests, ODI and T20I. Bangladesh have added two more newly appointed coaches for this tour. Sri Lanka Rangana Herath was named as the spin trainer, while South African Prince Ashwell was named as batting consultant. Bangladesh already has Russell Domingo as head coach, Ottis Gibson as pace bowling coach and Ryan Cook as field coach. National team players should perform better on the international stage with this current training setup. This article explains what Bangladesh cricket fans can expect from Herath and Prince.
What Rangana Herath will need to do as a Spin Coach
Former Sri Lankan international Rangana Herath took over from Daniel Vettori as Bangladesh coach. He will be in charge of the spinners until the T20 World Cup, which is due to start in October this year.
One of the main obstacles with Daniel Vettori was the language. The players struggled to understand his lessons despite the presence of a translator to help them. Another important factor was culture. Vettori was not entirely familiar with the culture and mindset of this part of the world. Sometimes he couldn’t figure out what the players really wanted from him?

In such scenarios Rangana Herath would be a much better choice to coach Bangladeshi fringe players. We saw previously how Chandika Hathurusinghe transformed the Bangladesh national team and got the best out of his players, he was able to encourage players to perform at their best on the pitch because he understood their psyche.
Likewise, as a player from the subcontinent, Herath has a deep understanding of the players’ mentality and what motivates them to perform better on the pitch. Herath can give players an individual lesson in which he can share his knowledge and advise them properly.

Herath could work with future talents who have the potential to represent Bangladesh in the near future. His presence would be of tremendous benefit to the next generation of cricketers.
Bangladesh cricket fans hope Herath gets more involved in the culture of the country and offers his invaluable knowledge about the raw talent of the country. It will also benefit Herath if he is successful.

What Ashwell Prince is expected to do as a batting consultant
During his stint as a batting advisor for the Bangladesh national team, Neil McKenzie had a blast. Opener Liton Das openly admitted how Neil McKenzie had helped him become a good batsman. For the Zimbabwe series, McKenzie’s compatriot Ashwell Prince was assigned a similar role. BCB may extend his contract depending on his results on the tour.
How can Ashwell Prince impress BCB and land a long term contract with the cricket board? First and foremost, Prince needs to dig into the root causes of Bangladesh’s failure to perform as intended in the T20 format. Bangladesh desperately need big hitters in the shortest form in the game. Unfortunately, no one has shown any real potential yet, so the chase continues.

Ashwell Prince can inspire young players to improve their mentality in the twenty20 format. Then he can teach them everything they need to know to be successful as a powerful hitter in this format. If the players respond by taking appropriate lessons from him, his appointment will be deemed beneficial.
In the case of the cricket test, Bangladesh players should be patient and be aware of the format of the longer version. They don’t understand the importance of playing multiple sessions as a batsman because that’s the beauty of trial cricket. Batters need to have the mentality to put all of their energy and passion into the game to be successful.

Another crucial factor is developing the mindset of shifting attention from one format to another. Bangladesh cricket fans would be delighted if Ashwell Prince could bring some consistency to the approach of the batters.
BCB breeders have named three separate teams for the Test, ODI and T20 formats for the upcoming Zimbabwe tour. Each format has its own characteristics and players must understand how to play in each of them. Coaches have a vital role to play in this regard. It is important to identify players’ gaps by developing relationships with them and offering them assistance on how to reach their full potential. Bangladesh cricket fans will have these expectations from both Herath other Prince.
