The “big concern” of the rugby league after the roosters slaughter

The NRL’s lingering issue with rash scores has brought recent rule changes into question, after the Melbourne Storm beat the Sydney Roosters 46 to zero last night.

James Willis said the crushing wins this season “must be a major concern” right after the middle of the competition.

“There are a number of ways to look at it: one is that Melbourne and Penrith are on another level this season.

“Even 16 laps in a 25-lap competition, having a two-horse race is not healthy.

“But more broadly, the statistics don’t lie… the number of wins by 13+… is the highest since the early 90s.

“45% of games this season… have been decided by 19 points or more. It’s mind-boggling. “

Penrith Panthers coach Ivan Cleary weighed in on the issue, but told James Willis he’s not convinced it’s all caused by rule changes.

“I don’t think it’s that easy.

“I’m not too sure – if I knew the answer, I would probably tell it to you.”

“It just seems like there is a little gap between the best and the rest, I guess this year more than any other.”
