Lionel Messi Barcelona renewal talks ‘progressing adequately’, says Laporta

Long discussions on the extension of the historic stay of superstar out of contract Lionel Messi in Barcelona “are progressing adequately”, according to the president Joan Laporta.

Messi, 34, saw his record-breaking 18-year-old attachment – which contained 672 goals in 778 games and 34 major trophies – to the Catalans officially ended on July 1 when his last contract expired. Difficulties in complying with La Liga’s financial fair play rules have complicated discussions between the parties over a renewal.

Laporta, however, was optimistic about a successful conclusion when presenting Mago Pop’s show ‘Nothing is Impossible’.

“[Messi’s renewal] is progressing adequately, ”he said.

“All Catalans, Barcelona, Catalonia and everyone in football are happy because Leo won the Copa America.

“It’s very exciting to see the best player in football history getting excited about winning a title like this and he made us all cry for joy.

“He is very happy, we are all happy, I am happy for Leo who succeeded [to win the Copa America], with his teammates, and that Argentina is once again in the top flight, and [I am] therefore [happy] for [Sergio] Agüero.

“I’m happy for Messi’s family, for Argentina, for Barcelona who are recognized, admired and loved for having this connection with Leo.”

Messi was the player of the tournament last weekend when Argentina beat Brazil 1-0 in the Copa America final, ending their dearth for the senior international trophy.
