MCC match among the events marking the anniversary of the Enville Cricket Club

One of Britain’s most historic cricket clubs is preparing to celebrate a very special double century.

Enville Cricket Club in South Staffordshire wants to mark its 200th anniversary in 2021 with a busy summer festival.

Based on the grounds of Enville Hall near Stourbridge in the West Midlands, Enville can trace its origins to 1821 when a letter from the estate agent to Lord Stamford refers to a match at the Hall to celebrate the coronation of George IV.

In 1857 the London Illustrated News ran an article comparing Enville to Lord’s cricket ground.

The comparison favored the Midlands frame and concluded that Enville was the best cricket ground in the world.

Although the club did not retain this prestigious honor, it continued to feature on the cricket map.

Legendary WG Grace is known to have played Enville and during a week of celebrations in July the club will be hosting a memorabilia exhibit.

Today Enville is a modern and progressive club with three senior teams in the Worcestershire County League.

The club also has a thriving junior section and has a dedicated team of volunteers who have been busy battling the financial uncertainty caused by the coronavirus lockdown.

When revenues in 2020 were decimated by restrictions, the club organized a tough sponsored walk that visited 50 local cricket grounds.

Enville Cricket Club President Trevor Spears said: “Few clubs have the longevity of our historic club and our ‘family’ worked hard last year to raise funds which brought us to 200. not by raising over £ 10,000 with the sponsored Covid-50 walks.

“Planning for the festival week started five years ago and a lot of time and hard work has gone into all sections having a day to shine.

“The week will end on a high note when we host a summer ball and a game against the MCC.

“It is an exciting but intimidating time where we will present not only the club but also our hometown of Enville which provides such an attractive setting.”

The week of events to celebrate Enville’s 200th anniversary will begin on Saturday July 17 and end on Sunday July 25 with a match between an Enville XI and an MCC XI.

To mark the anniversary, club secretary for over 50 years, David Thomas, has compiled a book on the history of Enville CC to be released ahead of the week of celebrations.
