Fans were devastated after it was revealed in a recent Nintendo Direct video that Luigi apparently met a grizzly end at the hands of Grim Reaper prior to the release of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate later in 2018.
However, new reports have emerged indicating that Luigi’s obvious death may actually hint at a new kind of single-player campaign mode, according to Nintendo Life.
Speculation has centered on what exactly a fuzzy section of the in-game menu actually said during the Nintendo Direct video.
Some have suggested that Luigi’s apparent death might hint at a new “Spirits” campaign mode.
According to Twitter user @noctulescent, the fuzzy section would contain the word “Spirits,” indicating that a new single-player campaign mode could be implemented in the game and linked to Luigi’s apparent death.
Speculation has also spilled over to Reddit, where some Nintendo fans have suggested that the potential new single-player campaign mode could involve collecting the spirits of seemingly deceased Nintendo characters to unlock them like Luigi as well as Mega Man, who apparently was killed in an E3 2018 video.
Some fan theories have also emerged suggesting that players should actually kill Luigi and other Nintendo characters in order to unlock them as playable characters.
Nintendo has yet to confirm the existence of a “Spirits” campaign mode or other speculated changes to the game, which means fans will likely have to wait for the game’s official release later in 2018 to finally find out.
