Leicester Tigers general manager Andrea Pinchen said: “One of the driving forces of the Tigers is to promote rugby at all levels within our community and we are delighted to be able to announce the formation of a women’s team. and a major program to develop women’s football in our region.
“Rugby is an inclusive sport with wide appeal and we want the Tigers to inspire women and girls of all skill levels to get involved in the game and give them the opportunity to wear the Leicester Tigers jersey and run to play. at Mattioli Woods. Welford Road.
“Everyone in rugby is rightly proud of the success of the England women’s team and many members of the squad in recent years have had ties to our region including Vicky Macqueen, Vicky Fleetwood and Emily Scarratt , the 2019 World Player of the Year.
“They are role models who can inspire others to play, but only if given exciting opportunities to do so, and that’s what we aim to deliver with a Tigers women’s rugby program.
“Vicky Macqueen has a lot of experience playing at the elite level but also at the local level, and she will now focus on recruiting a squad and building a squad for her inaugural season while the club provides the facilities and the opportunities to develop the game, including the appointment of a Women’s and Women’s Rugby Development Manager who will lead coaching sessions to support our clubs and schools.
“This is a great project to start, especially in the circumstances of the last 18 months, but it is a project that we are committed to and we know it is a project that will be warmly welcomed by the Tigers family.
“We are looking for anyone who wants to get involved to get in touch with the club. Whether they are potential players, coaches or companies who can help make this program a great program. “
Macqueen said: “I am really excited about the whole perspective that is unfolding for Leicester Tigers and Leicestershire women’s rugby. Developing the game in this area has always been close to my heart.
“This starting point is really exciting because it’s such a great opportunity. It is a huge challenge but an exciting challenge.
“We want to lay the groundwork and create a culture in line with the culture of the Leicester Tigers.
“Watching women’s football grow over the past few years has been phenomenal and now we have the opportunity to create a path in our region from grassroots to elite football. The key to a good career is the right coaching, the right recruitment and giving talent opportunities.
“It’s a very strong sporting country and the aim is to develop that talent here, to develop it and to allow the players to see a path here.”
