TOKYO: New Zealand coach Danny Hay said he would give Michael Boxall (Photo) every chance of playing in the Tokyo Olympics despite the defender missing his opener against South Korea on Thursday due to injury.
Boxall, one of the team’s three major players, remains in the United States after suffering a thigh injury with his club Minnesota United, but Hay is hoping the 32-year-old can travel to Japan to join the ‘team.
“We’re giving him as much time as possible, and if that means we have him for the last group game, then fantastic, that would be like bringing in a new signing,” Hay said, as quoted by the Neo website. Zealander Stuff.
“I hope if we do what we’re capable of and qualify for the next round, if he’s there for that, then brilliant.
“We made a commitment to him and the rest of the team to give ‘Boxy’ as much time as needed to try and prove his fitness so he can come here.”
New Zealand face the Koreans on Thursday before facing Honduras and Romania in Group B, with the top two sides advancing to the quarter-finals. – Reuters
