An American gymnast and a Czech beach volleyball player were added on Tuesday to the count of those accredited for the Tokyo Olympics who tested positive for COVID-19 this month.
Tokyo Olympics organizers said 71 people have now tested positive. The total includes 31 of the tens of thousands of international visitors expected to Japan to compete or work at the Games, which open on Friday.
Positive tests for US gymnastics substitute Kara Eaker and Czech team member Ondřej PeruSič were announced on Monday. Eaker was at a training camp in Chiba Prefecture and PeruSič stayed at the Tokyo Bay Olympic Village.
The two have entered a 14-day quarantine, organizers said. This period includes the three scheduled matches of PeruSič with his playing partner David Schweiner.
One of 13 new cases added to the official tally on Tuesday includes “games staff” – a category including team officials and sports staff – in Tokyo who are not staying in the village.
Other newly reported cases scattered across Japan include Games contractors and a volunteer.
