Chelsea’s summer transfer strategy has come under fire, with Arsenal set to claim bragging rights from their Premier League rivals.
The Blues are considering a title challenge next season, but Thomas Tuchel’s side need reinforcements to close the gap between Manchester City and Manchester United.
So far, the Stamford Bridge side have focused their efforts on signing a new striker, with both Erling Haaland and Harry Kane in sight.
Next on the shopping list looks to be a new central midfielder and more support in the backcourt, but according to Danny Mills they are neglecting a key position.
According to the former Manchester City defender, the Blues should make a new central defender one of the priorities this summer.
While it may seem confusing after Chelsea have conceded just 12 goals in the 26 Premier League appearances Tuchel has taken on, the defense appears to be a weak spot for their team.
Tuchel can currently call on Thiago Silva, Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen as full center-backs.
But Silva’s injury issues last season, coupled with a desire to include Cesar Azpilicueta on the side, saw the right-back used in the last three.
But if they are serious about a title challenge next season, it might be better if the Blues focus on adding a new center-back to their squad, rather than signing a replacement for Reece James. .
One of the best center-backs available this summer is Ben White, who is set to join Arsenal.
While Chelsea have reportedly been interested in White at one point, only the Gunners have made offers for him.
And Mills asked why the Blues hadn’t cemented their interest in White, saying he would be a big improvement over Christensen.
Should Chelsea have made more effort to sign Ben White? Comments below.
“If you go to Haaland or Kane, the job is done, good chances of winning the league. You have to be realistic about it, ”Mills told talkSPORT.
“Defensively, they are very strong. Coming back to my point on Ben White, Chelsea are not interested?
“Ben White must be better than Andreas Christensen, sure. I think so and Arsenal fans probably think they wouldn’t trade Ben White for Andreas Christensen. “
Mills also believes White would be the perfect signing for the Blues and would likely prefer a move to Stamford Bridge over Emirates Stadium.
“That’s what I was talking about. I’m a little surprised that more top four clubs, bigger clubs, better performing clubs in recent seasons have come for Ben White, ”he added.
“Because if Chelsea want a central defender, he would fit in perfectly. He can play in a two, he can play in a three, he can play in midfield if he has to, he’s a good defender and he’s good with the ball.
“And from his perspective he would play Champions League football, maybe a chance to win it and a chance to win the Premier League.”
