Seamer Ollie Robinson has been called up to the England Tryouts for the first two games of the five-game series against India, but Jofra Archer and Chris Woakes are out due to injury.
Robinson was fined and suspended for eight matches, including five suspended for two years, for “a number of offensive tweets” he sent between 2012 and 2014, but was cleared earlier this month to resume his international duties.
The 27-year-old is joined in the 17-man squad by Ben Stokes, who missed the two-game streak against New Zealand in June after breaking a finger in the Indian Premier League.
Michael Holding said earlier this summer that Robinson deserves a second chance if his offensive tweets were an isolated incident
The all-rounder returned to international cricket earlier than expected to captain England to a 3-0 Royal London Series victory over Pakistan earlier this month after captain Eoin Morgan and his entire squad were forced to self-isolate after a coronavirus outbreak in the First XI Squad.
Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow and Sam Curran also return to the test squad but Archer (right elbow) and Woakes (bruised heel) are both unavailable.
England ODI captain Ben Stokes admitted he was “surprised” at how easily his inexperienced team beat Pakistan
Archer continues to progress after elbow surgery, but is not ready at this point to return to the cricket test. Woakes suffered a bruised heel last week and is on a rehab program aimed at keeping him fit and available later in the series.
Head coach Chris Silverwood said: “A home test series against India is one of the most anticipated red ball series and it promises to be five outstanding tests.
“India are a quality team that have shown their ability to get results away from home. We expect a very competitive series and have selected our strongest team possible.
“The feedback from versatile Ben Stokes and Sam Curran brings a balance that allows us to return to a structure that has proven its worth in Test cricket.
“Ben’s leadership in the Royal London Series, when he was playing when his finger was not yet 100%, characterized his character and commitment which pushes the players around him forward. With the return of Jos and Jonny in the squad we have added more experience and quality that will be needed against the second world team.
