David Alaba is set to shine at Real Madrid by inheriting the number “4” left by Sergio Ramos.
MADRID, July 21 (Xinhua) – New Real Madrid signing David Alaba said he did not arrive at the club to replace anyone during his official presentation to the press on Wednesday.
The Austrian joins a free transfer from Bayern Munich and inherited the number “4” shirt left open after Sergio Ramos’ departure and subsequent transfer to Paris Saint Germain.
“This number was given to me because there was no other number available and I know what this number means for the club,” said Alaba, who said it was an “honor” to inherit the jersey of the former Real Madrid captain.
However, he dismissed suggestions that he would be the club’s “new Ramos”.
“I am here to be David Alaba. I want to bring my skills and I will try to bring my strengths as a player and, on a personal level, to be myself,” he insisted.
Alaba can play through defense and also in midfield, and he said he had received “several offers” when it was obvious he would not stay in Bavaria.
“The only option was Real Madrid. They are the biggest club in the world and that is the challenge I was looking for… They are a huge club, known all over the world and I have seen pictures of Real Madrid since I was very young, so it’s very special to be here today, ”he said.
The 29-year-old said he was happy to reunite with Carlo Ancelotti, who returned to coach Real Madrid for a second stint after Zinedine Zidane resigned at the end of last season.
“I have known him since my stay in Munich, we have a great relationship and it is a pleasure to work with him again,” commented Alaba.
