Japan draw 1-1 with Canada in women’s soccer opener

Japan drew 1-1 with Canada in their opening game of the Tokyo Women’s Olympic Soccer Tournament on Wednesday after a stunning late equalizer from star forward Mana Iwabuchi.

Canada captain Christine Sinclair gave her side the lead just five minutes into the Group E game in an empty Sapporo Dome, hitting the post before recovering a fortuitous rebound and slapping the opposite side.

Unable to tie a penalty early in the second half, the Olympic hosts saved the draw after Iwabuchi found the net in the 84th minute, running over a long Yui Hasegawa ball and hitting a shot near the edge of the surface.
