Jesse Lingard and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer shared a laughing moment in training despite rumors he is on the radar of several other Premier League clubs.
Following Solskjaer’s permanent appointment as Manchester United manager in 2019, Lingard struggled to secure playing time at Old Trafford and was consequently loaned to West Ham last season.
But that’s where the 28-year-old jump-started his career, scoring nine goals in 16 appearances for the Hammers and helping them secure Europa League football, which consequently led Lingard to be included in the England’s provisional team of 30 for Euro 2020.
Back at United, Lingard is keen to show manager Solskjaer what he is capable of.
But it remains to be seen if he will have the opportunity to do so, as rumors circulate that Everton and West Ham are preparing offers for the England international.
However, footage from a recent training video shows Lingard looking very comfortable with the United squad, and in Solskjaer’s good books too.
A video showed the Norwegian boss spilling the remains of his water bottle on Lingard’s head after a hard workout in the summer heat, laughing in the refreshing downpour.
Will Lingard play for Manchester United next season? Comments below
Following United’s pre-season game against Derby, Solskjaer revealed he wants to keep Lingard at the club next season.
He said: “Jesse is back, he’s been brilliant and he wants to fight for his place.
“There is nothing better than seeing players ready to fight for their place. Of course what he did towards the end of the season was the real Jesse.
“That’s what we know he’s capable of. I think we’ve seen towards the end [of our own season] that we sometimes ran out of options.
“He’s still in my plans. I’m expecting him at Man Utd at the start of the season.”
However, that decision may be out of Solskjaer’s grasp given that Lingard is out of a contract in 12 months and the board may want to cash it before it’s too late.
The Manchester United academy product will be forced to decide whether he wants to stay and make an impact for the Red Devils again over the next few years or leave United permanently for the first time in his career.
According to Football Insider, a recruiting source told them Lingard wants to join West Ham, but only if they improve on his current United contract.
It could mean making the all-rounder the London club’s biggest earner on a long-term contract, which should upset the much-wanted Declan Rice, who many believe should have a more lucrative contract anyway.
It remains to be seen where Lingard will play his football next season, but what we do know is that if he picks up where he left off in the last campaign, he will be a resounding success.
