Amit Panghal among 3 Indian boxers to receive byes

Tokyo [Japan], July 22 (ANI): Star boxer Amit Panghal (52 kg) is one of four Indian boxers who received exemptions for the pre-quarterfinals of the Tokyo Olympics according to the draw released on Thursday. Satish Kumar, Simranjit Kaur and Lovlina Borgohain are the other three players who received exemptions.
Six-time world champion pugilist Mary Kom will lead India’s charge at the next flagship event. She will face Dominica Miguelina Hernandez on Sunday.
In good form, Pooja Rani will face Algeria’s Ichrak Chaib in her opener while Vikas Krishan will face Japan’s Mensah Okazawa in the round of 16 on Saturday to kick off India’s medal quest.
India won a final boxing medal at the London Olympics in 2012 when Mary Kom clinched a bronze medal four years after Vijender Singh finished third in the 2008 flagship event. Since then, India has failed. won more medals at the Olympic Games in the discipline.
However, India came close to winning a medal at the 2016 Games before boxer Vikas Krishan Yadav was defeated in the quarterfinals.
The men’s boxing team includes number one and Asian Games champion Panghal (52 kg), Manish Kaushik (63 kg), Vikas Krishan (69 kg), Ashish Kumar (75 kg) and Satish Kumar (91 kg). The women’s team includes Mary Kom (51 kg), Simranjit Kaur (60 kg), Lovlina Borgohain (69 kg) and Pooja Rani (75 kg).
With 127 athletes, the Tokyo Olympics will see the largest contingent of Indian players competing. The Tokyo Olympics will kick off on Friday and the Games will run through August 8 this year. The event was supposed to take place last year, but it has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. (ANI)
