The Olympics are on.
Let’s go ! The flame is lit, the trials have started, the Olympics are on. Tokyo 2020, now 2021, is early, and it is a sort of victory for sport after a year of postponement and several risks of cancellation due to a pandemic that has broken all world records. These are special Olympics that take place in a country where “sanitization” is not an empty word and where the risk of cancellation of a test or event is permanent.
Tokyo 2021 is launched but there is no guarantee that it will be completed. There is no sign that he will be marked with a white stone in terms of performance, but if these Games make us vibrate as the Euro surprised us (pleasantly), we sign immediately.
It is with a nostalgic air that these Olympics open for the first time without Usain Bolt since 2004…, without Mo Farah, without Bekele, without Dibaba. But the heirs are there. Who will be the new king of the pure event, the 100 meters? Akani Simbine, the South African TGV, which has just beaten the African record, can he claim the crown? Since Frank Fredericks, double silver medal in the 100 and 200 meters in Barcelona (1992) and Atlanta (1996), Africa has been looking for the sprinter who could finally beat the Americans or the Jamaicans.
Over long distances, there will be no need to look far. Once again, it will be an Ethiopian-Kenyan duel. Gold assists Ethiopians Letesenbet Gidey and Gudaf Tsegay over 5,000 and 10,000 meters. The 1500 meters should not escape the Kenyan Faith Kipyegon. African gold seekers will be numerous in Tokyo, and the Burkinabè Hugues-Fabrice Zango will be carried by a whole people to win the first medal for the country of upright men.
And SNA in all of this? For us, “The main thing is to participate” once again to promote, to exhibit, to, just, to talk a little more about African sport and its actors. The Olympics, like the Euro, and the CAN qualifiers, constituting a moment for us to live and bring Africa to life in sport, in the Olympics. Since Monday July 19, focus on flashbacks, the opportunity to relive the exploits of Bikila or Boulmerka, to discover forgotten symbols like Abdou Sèye, who challenged France, or Aki Bua who “Be scared” to Ugandan dictator Amine Dada.
Throughout these Olympics, Sports New Africa will follow African performances, the medal chances of the continent’s athletes, zoom in on the specialty of certain countries, and above all tell the exploits as closely as possible.
Like most African athletes, Tokyo 2021 is an opportunity for SNA to calibrate once again. To aim higher, to be stronger …
