Canada’s Maggie MacNeil wins the women’s 100-meter butterfly.

Margaret MacNeil of Canada won the 100-meter butterfly with surprise clocking 55.59 to beat Yufei Zhang of China and Emma McKeon of Australia.

Torri Huske, the 18-year-old American, narrowly failed to keep the movement of America’s youth alive in swimming, missing a bronze medal by one-hundredth of a second.

Huske was in the leading pool at the turn but lost pace in the final quarter of the race as MacNeil started from lane 7 and touched down first for the surprise victory. It was MacNeil’s first individual Olympic medal and his second at the Tokyo Games. She helped Canada win the silver medal in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay on Sunday.

Zhang, the highest ranked swimmer in that event, finished in 55.64 and McKeon finished in 55.72.
