Germany’s Florian Wellbrock added a marathon swimming gold medal to his pool bronze medal, winning the men’s 10 kilometer race in Tokyo Bay.

Wellbrock took the lead early in the race and dominated most of the way on another sweltering morning in Tokyo. Even with the start of the race at 6.30am local time, the temperature was already 81 degrees (27.2 degrees Celsius) with 80% humidity, making it seem like it was close to 90 degrees.

Britain’s Hector Pardoe didn’t finish either.

Wellbrock escaped on the final lap to win by 25.3 seconds, finishing in 1 hour, 48 minutes, 33.7 seconds. He also won a bronze medal in the 1,500-meter freestyle on the final day of swimming at the pool.

Reigning Olympic marathon champion Ferry Weertman of the Netherlands was seventh while American Jordan Wilimovsky was 10th.
