After coming out in the first round of the US Open, Andy Murray continued his comeback in a Challenger event in Rennes on Monday, saying he wanted to play matches and boost his ranking.
“Obviously I would like to try to win the event,” said the Scotsman, who beat German Yannick Maden 6-3, 6-1 on Monday in the first round in Rennes.
“The most important thing for me is just to get games. I want to continue playing, competing and getting my body used to playing two or three gourmet matches in a week ”.
Murray, who underwent right hip surgery in 2017 and again in 2019, lost in five sets to Stefanos Tsitsipas, third in the first round in New York, where the Scotsman won the third of his major titles in 2012 .
“One of the goals by the end of the year is to try and improve my ranking significantly, and to do that I often have to compete in competitions,” said the 34-year-old, ranked 116.
“I always feel like I can play at a very high level but if all the time when I go to the big tournaments I play the best players from the start of the event, it’s not that easy.”
“The Challengers often have good players. We have three guys who were in the top 10. It’s pretty rare. There should be some good games, and it’s nice for the public to come out and watch the French players, ”he said.
