Barcelona vs Bayern Munich: live score, updates, UEFA Champions League group stage highlights

It is the flagship match of the first day of football in the UEFA Champions League: two of the legendary European clubs will oppose it when FC Barcelona host Bayern Munich at Camp Nou.

No one is giving a Barcelona a chance without Lionel Messi in this game, especially not with Bayern Munich firing on all cylinders to start the season. The German team have already won five of their first six official matches. Meanwhile, Barcelona have only had one chance to play three La Liga games and are still undefeated as a new scoring hero has emerged for the Blaugrana: Dutchman Memphis Depay.

Both teams are expected to come out of Group E, which also includes Dynamo Kiev (Ukraine) and Benfica (Portugal). Only the top two teams will come out of the squad, and Benfica will be ready to capitalize on any Barcelona missteps as they seek to regain their foothold following club icon Messi’s departure over the summer.

56th minute: Goal!! And there is the second. Bavaria has just fired some shots into the box. Musiala shoots on the right post then Robert Lewandowski puts the rebound at home. It’s way too easy. Bayern barely celebrates that goal. Not what you would expect at Camp Nou.

52nd minute. : After a nice combination in the penalty area, Leroy Sane gets a shot in the box which is stopped by Ter Stegen with a set piece. Bayern forwards can navigate their way with relative ease.

46th minute. : The second half is underway. Will Bayern benefit against Barcelona?

Halftime: Barcelona 0, Bayern Munich 1

Half time: Did Bayern Munich sweat in this half? It was such a comfortable half for the German side, who were never too troubled by what Barcelona had to offer. It felt like Bayern’s goal was coming: the team’s forwards were simply more enterprising and dangerous than their predictable Barcelona counterparts. It took Barcelona playing in Europe for fans to see how far Barcelona have fallen after a summer which saw the club lose some of their best players. This Barcelona could have a hard time getting out of the group. It’s sad to see.

40th min. : What an Alphonso Davies play. Memphis Depay just tried to get around him and Davies educated him: he deprived Depay of the ball and slipped right next to him.

38th minute. : Barcelona’s first real attempt is weak. A cross from Jordi Alba from the left and it was over the head of Frenkie de Jong, who made a run into the box.

34th minute. : Bayern goal! Thomas Muller has room to fire a shot from 20 yards and he swerves off Eric Garcia’s back and passes Ter Stegen. Bavaria is standing and wants more.

31st minute. : Bayern again in Barcelona’s area! German attackers are more fluid in their movement and ready to trade and combine. It causes problems for Barcelona, but it’s an offside that foils Bayern here.

27th minute. : Fantastic sliding block from Pique in the box to beat Bayern. Then a minute later, Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo had a wide open header into Bayern’s box which he sends high. The two sides come closer.

21st minute. : Many expected Barcelona to be crushed in this one and it’s not like that at all. Barcelona are really in this game.

19th minute. : Luck for Bavaria! Sergi Roberto with a gift in his own half and it’s Leroy Sane with a shot that Ter Stegen has to hit.

15th min. : Sergi Roberto meets a cross from the left side with a shot over the bar. Barcelona pass through and behind Bayern’s back line. Looks like the Blaugrana are targeting that left attacking flank (away from Alphonso Davies).

10th minute. : Wow. Ball into Lewandowski in the box and Ronald Araujo pushes him into the box and Lewandowski hits the ground after trying to stand. It looked like a penalty, but England officials weren’t interested.

9th minute: Lewandowski gets a free kick for Bayern from around 25 yards away, but the German team can’t take advantage of it. This game cannot get out of speed.

5th minute: Referee Michael Oliver shows Joshua Kimmich a yellow card for knocking down Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong. Nothing comes from the ensuing free kick.

4th minute: Slow pace to start this one. Barcelona overthrow him in their own half under pressure from Bayern.

1st minute: Here we go, Bayern immediately made a high pressing.

2:58 p.m. ET: The Barcelona faithful don’t appreciate the Champions League theme song like some of us:
