Three races, three winners and a new leader at the Finn Masters on Balaton • Live Sail Die

New Hungarian national champion Akos Lukats took the lead on the penultimate day of the 2021 Finn European Masters at Tihanyi Hajós Egylet in Tihany, Hungary. Bas De Waal of the Netherlands is back in second place with Taras Havrysh of Ukraine finishing third. There were race wins for Harvysh, de Waal and Vladimir Stasyuk.

The first two races went in a stable 7 to 12 knots, but the third race got more complicated as the wind weakened. There’s still a lot to play for on Saturday’s final matchday, with Lukats four points ahead of de Waal and Havrysh just one point more.

The hairpin end and left side again looked popular in Friday’s first two races. Havrysh won the first race of the day ahead of de Waal in the steady easterly wind who also stayed in place for the second race. De Waal completed the top mark well in the next race, then took the left tail wind to move forward and spread out over the fleet for a comfortable victory.

The last race of the day was more delicate with a lighter wind and more to the right. Lukats started off the boat and immediately veered right to place the incoming quarterback at the top. He led all the way before being passed by Stasyuk on the last tailwind, but did enough to take the overall lead from Zdenek Gebhart, who had a high scoring day and fell to the fourth place.

Highlights of Day 3 of the 2021 Finn European Masters in Tihany, Hungary

Lukats said: “I started this day second and didn’t do very well on first. I started at the end and was really fighting for my place. I didn’t have the right speed but managed to keep it for seventh place. The second race was a race where you don’t really do anything and I don’t know where I’m from.

“Then, in the last one, I decided to take a right and I started on the boat and it paid off. I was in the lead until the end but still couldn’t win the race, so I now have four second places. I could have won them all, but I guess it’s not that bad. But overall a great day. “

Lukats has been sailing in Finnish for 14 years. Taking the lead, “It’s really a dream over these two weeks. Last week we had the Hungarian nationals and I never had the ambition, but I accidentally won it. There were a lot of factors, but it was a miracle. Let’s see if this continues. “

Bas de Waal goes back to second place overall.

“It was still a beautiful day. The wind was more stable than the other days. In the first and second races the best lane was on the left and so I did, and I got a second and a first. In the third race the wind got choppy and it was difficult for me to deal with it so I got a 12. But a great day.

“There are only four points left at the first, and tomorrow anything can happen, so hopefully we have the same stable wind.”

The championship ends on Saturday. Three more races are scheduled, but the forecast is not particularly optimistic.
