Cristiano Ronaldo knocks out steward with a capricious shot ahead of Manchester United’s Champions League loss to Young Boys | Football news

Cristiano Ronaldo knocked out a flight attendant with a capricious practice shot ahead of Manchester United’s Champions League loss to Swiss Young Boys on Tuesday night.

The 36-year-old’s stray strike came as United players warmed up ahead of their opener of the group stage in Bern.

The bullet struck a flight attendant on the guidelines and the impact knocked it off the ground, with Ronaldo among those watching to make sure she was okay.

It ended up being a happier end to the night for the flight attendant than Ronaldo – she received the footballer’s famous number seven jersey, while United suffered a shock 2-1 defeat.

United were beaten despite Ronaldo’s first goal after just 13 minutes.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka was sent off in the first half and Young Boys scored a late game-winner to take all three points.

The game saw Ronaldo level up to former Real Madrid teammate Iker Casillas for the most Champions League appearances in history, with 177 appearances in Europe’s top competition, almost two weeks after being became the most successful men’s international.

Manchester United brought home a legend, signed one of football’s greatest defenders and added one of the brightest prospects in European football. But at the highest level, games can still be lost on the bench and that was one of them.

It was Jesse Lingard’s brash back pass that gave Young Boys a spectacular 2-1 victory in this Champions League opener. It was Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s lunge that reduced his team to 10 men, changing the course of the evening.

But it was Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer whose tactical decisions helped the Swiss side earn the points.
