Ross Lyon answers question from captain Nathan Fyfe Fremantle, Andrew Brayshaw and Alex Pearce contenders

Former Fremantle coach Ross Lyon has suggested that “maybe it is time” for Fremantle to appoint a younger captain to lighten the load on current skipper Nat Fyfe.

The 29-year-old suffered another season interrupted by injury in 2021 as his season ended prematurely with a shoulder injury.

Following Richmond captain Trent Cotchin’s decision to step down as skipper, the question has been asked to Lyon, Fyfe’s former coach, whether this summer would be the right time for the Dockers’ skipper to mirror Cotchin.

“I’m not sure. If Nathan wants to lead I think he’s good enough to pass them,” Lyon told Nine’s. Footy Ranked.

“But he carries a huge responsibility and that just might lighten the load on him. He will always lead, but it’s up to others to set the standards. [David] Mundy and Fyfe, you have the support, maybe it’s time.

“I think [Andrew] Brayshaw is a bit young [but] could do it and Alex Pearce certainly could. “

Lyon’s comments came after Fyfe spoke to the media for the first time since undergoing end-of-season shoulder surgery, saying he would be able to compete in a full preseason.

Fyfe has also indicated that he intends to play a role in the club’s roster of decisions during the offseason.

“I am still being denounced,” he said.

“I missed the last four weeks of the season so I spent a lot of time in Melbourne working with our recruiters and roster management and got a feel for our roster architecture for the next year. “
