Liverpool vs AC Milan LIVE: Champions League team news, line-ups and more tonight
Posted On September 15, 2021
The Champions League continues tonight and Liverpool begin their home group campaign against AC Milan.
Although the two clubs are among the handful of most successful teams in European Cup history, they have only met twice in competitive matches – the 2005 Champions League finals and 2007. This occasion will therefore be quite different and a first visit for the Serie A giants at Anfield. Neither have lost a game yet this quarter, with Jurgen Klopp’s Reds at group level with points at the top of the Premier League and the Rossoneri similarly positioned in the Italian top flight .
The match marks Milan’s return to Europe’s top competition after a nine-year absence, while Liverpool were champions in 2019 and left last year in the quarter-finals against Real Madrid. However, they hope to go further this year, given defensive absences due to injuries they faced at the time and the subsequent signing of Ibrahima Konate to bolster their ranks.

Klopp on Zlatan
He’s not part of the Milan squad for this game, but Zlatan Ibrahimovic is still on his mind. Before news broke he was offside, Jurgen Klopp was asked about how to handle the 39-year-old player and he got nothing but compliments.
“Zlatan. What a player”, Klopp said. “I saw videos of him when he got injured a few months ago and saw him on the spinning bike and fighting saying ‘Lions don’t rest long’ or whatever. else [he said].
“He is a man of exceptional moments. If he does not play, Olivier Giroud will play or [Ante] Rebic wants to play. All very good players.
“Zlatan is one of the best players this game has ever seen. He knows it and he tells everyone and I like it about him.
“Some careers end even when there is still some fuel in the tank but he is pulling every drop out of his body. He is able to play in all leagues in the world and that is exceptional.”

A long wait for Milan
AC Milan are making their first Champions League group stage appearance since 2013-14. This is the 18th time they have participated and they are just four behind Juventus’ Italian record of 22.
Milan’s last 11 Champions League campaigns have all extended to the round of 16, although five of the last six have ended in the round of 16.
In their last Champions League campaign, the Rossoneri were beaten by Atlético Madrid in the round of 16 after finishing second in their group behind Barcelona, collecting nine points in six games.
But now the seven-time European Cup champions are back and stand in the way of Liverpool.

Liverpool under Klopp
Liverpool are in the Champions League group stage for the 14th time; they have failed to qualify for the last 16 or more three times before.
This is the Reds’ fifth consecutive group campaign under Jürgen Klopp. They finished second for Real Madrid in the 2017-18 final and won their sixth European Cup over Tottenham with a 2-0 victory in the 2018-19 final.
Liverpool’s last two Champions League campaigns have ended in defeat against clubs from Madrid. They went to Atlético in the 2019-20 round of 16 and lost last year to Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.

Klopp in group B
Jurgen Klopp has explained how much he expects this Champions League group stage to claim that this is the strongest group he has been a part of at Liverpool.
“They are the strongest group we have had since I came to Liverpool”, said the German. “In 2012-2013 in Dortmund, I think we had Manchester City, Real Madrid and Ajax – it was a good group.
“This group prevents two very good teams from knockouts and delivers a strong team to the Europa League.
“I never understand when people talk about changes in the Champions League. I love the Champions League as it is and this group shows that there are no games where people are going to say to each other ‘ do I really want to watch this’.
“It will be exciting from the first to the last second. I don’t see any kind of early decisions made in this group.”
