PSG vs Lyon result: Messi was controversially substituted, but Icardi wins final goal

The hero of this day was not called Lionel Messi, Neymar or Kylian Mbappe. It was Paris Saint-Germain substitute striker Mauro Icardi who won the stoppage time as PSG remained perfect to start their League season with a 2-1 victory over Lyon. It was the first time that the ‘MNM’ trio – Messi-Neymar-Mbappe – had started a game together in front of their fans, but it did not go as planned.

After a hectic and balanced first half, in which Messi hit the woodwork with a free kick, Lyon took the lead thanks to Brazilian national team Lucas Paqueta and PSG appeared in serious trouble. The home team needed a questionable penalty to equalize. Neymar got the kick with what looked like a dip into the box and he stepped in to take it himself and tied 1-1.

The game seemed destined to end 1-1 until Mbappe made a cross into Lyon’s area deep in stoppage time and connected with Icardi, who came on in the 82nd minute. Icardi met the cross in stride and guided the ball with his forehead inside the far post as Parc des Princes went into celebration.
