A striking indication of the dominance of a seasonal weapon that Tom Trbojevic produced in 2021 is the brilliant Sydney Roosters pistol campaign James Tedesco, according to Parramatta legend Peter Sterling.
Sterling has pointed out that Trbojevic is the big favorite for this year’s Dally M medal, which is due to be awarded tonight, despite the scale of Tedesco’s campaign.
Trbojevic, Tedesco, Nathan Cleary, Cody Walker and Daly Cherry-Evans enter tonight’s awards ceremony as candidates for the game’s highest individual honor.
“I can’t get past Tom Trbojevic (for the Dally M medal),” Sterling told Wide World of Sports’ Sterlo wrap.
“He had only played 15 games before the football final, still ended the year with 28 tries and had the most profound effect on all players’ games this year.
“And when you consider how much someone like James Tedesco wore the same number, it shows how wonderful Tom Trbjoevic has had a season, despite it being only six months of injury.”
While Tedesco averaged 182.4 yards per game this season, Trbojevic averaged 209.6.
And while the Roosters captain averaged 1.1 assists per game, the Sea Eagles superstar averaged two per game.
Trbojevic also edged Tedesco on average tackles per game, registering 6.9 to 6.6 for his counterpart.
“He’s a freak of nature, really. The size, the strength, the power with which he plays, his involvement in every area of the pitch, not just sweeping but down the middle,” Sterling said.
“(Awesome Sea Eagles) Paul Vautin, and I think others, came out and said at the end of his career at Manly he would be the best player they’ve ever produced. And when you consider… Bob Fulton played there, Graham Eadie played there, Des Hasler, the wonderful players that they produced, if Tom is the best of them then he will have the career that we all predicted. ”
