A New York City mayor official told CNN on Friday that Irving would be allowed to train at the team’s premises but would not be eligible to play in the Nets’ home games at Barclays Center due to the city’s Covid-19 vaccine mandate.
Head coach Steve Nash had admitted his team would be without Irving for predictable home games, but Marks said the Nets would not allow a team member to be part-time.
“Kyrie made a personal choice and we respect her individual right to choose,” Marks said in a statement.
“Currently, the choice restricts his ability to be a full-time member of the team, and we will not allow any member of our team to participate with part-time availability.
“It is imperative that we continue to build chemistry as a team and stay true to our long-established values of unity and sacrifice.
“Our championship goals for the season have not changed, and to achieve those goals every member of our organization must shoot in the same direction. We are delighted with the start of the season and look forward to a successful campaign that will make the proud Brooklyn Borough. “
Irving, a seven-time All-Star, spoke on league media day last month about his enthusiasm to play in front of fans again, but refused to disclose his vaccination status, saying he “would like to keep all this private “.
“I know that I will be there every day no matter what and that I will just be there for my teammates as one of the leaders of the team,” he added.
“I know the focus needs to be at an all-time high, no distractions. This is the last thing I wanted to create, it was more distractions and more hype and more drama around it.
“I’m doing my best to keep this going with good intentions and a good heart.”
The NBA warned the Nets as well as the New York Knicks and Golden State Warriors in September that new Covid-19 policies set by local governments would ban any unvaccinated player from playing home games in New York and San Francisco .
The Nets open their 2021-22 season on the road against defending NBA champion Milwaukee Bucks on October 19, before hosting their first home game of the season on October 24 against the Charlotte Hornets.
