The Dolphins celebrate winning the license to be the 17th team in the NRL.
But as the champagne bottles burst, many rugby league fans are asking themselves a serious question: where has ‘Redcliffe’ gone?
The Redcliffe Dolphins have ditched the geographic part of the moniker and so, at this point at least, will be competing in the NRL competition in 2023 officially known as the Dolphins.
They are said to be one of only two teams in the league not to be linked to a specific city or region. The Warriors dropped “New Zealand” from their name a few years ago, despite being based in Auckland.
The Dolphins are based in Redcliffe, north of Brisbane, but the NRL team will not be specifically linked to that area by name.

“It’s the Dolphins. I’m sure they’ll be able to provide a bit more detail on their thinking and strategy, but that’s what we decided together,” said NRL boss Andrew Abdo. about the decision to remove Redcliffe from the name.
“Historically this has been a decision made by individual clubs, but for us it made sense to be the Dolphins.

“We’re talking here not only of the greater Brisbane area, but we’re talking about north Brisbane, we’re talking about Moreton Bay, Sunshine Coast.
“They had a co-affiliation with two clubs, but they are also talking about Central Queensland Capras and other broader affiliations, and there are plans to discuss what the women’s course is like as well.
“So there are a lot of considerations. What we see in our research is that people are incredibly receptive to rivalry between cities.

“Here we have the best of both worlds – we’re going to have a really big rivalry here with the Broncos… more importantly, we now have truly four Queensland teams, which opens up 12 games of rivalry for us, it opens up an opportunity to rivalry with the Titans and Cowboys, not just the Broncos.
“Being able to capture the downtown rivalry, but also appeal to a much larger base, is the best of both worlds, and that’s why dolphins as a name are more appropriate.”
NRL admits Dolphins as 17th team
Dolphins president Bob Jones was later asked about the matter.
He says dolphins can still change their name to reflect a city or region.
“The colors will be our traditional colors, red and white. Our name will certainly be the Dolphins, we have always been the Dolphins. What we put before or after is open to discussion, it has not yet been decided. ” Jones said.
“The Dolphins we’re really committed to. Every Sydney team and the Storm, everybody shortens them to what their brand fundamentally is, and we’ll be the same.
“We’ll be the Dolphins, so that’s our name for now.”
However, many rugby league experts weren’t impressed with the news from the Dolphins.
