Badosa, Ostapenko, Pegula advance the day of upheavals

California [USA], Oct. 13 (ANI): No.24 seed Jelena Ostapenko is in the quarterfinals of the BNP Paribas Open for the first time in four appearances in the main draw of the BNP Paribas Open, knocking down No.1. Series Iga Swiatek, of Poland, 6-4, 6-3, at Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Tuesday.

The Nos. Seeders 1 and 2 have now bounced back in consecutive days, with seed Karolina Pliskova falling to lucky loser Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil 6-3, 7-5 on Monday.

The day started with another big top shake up, as 19th seed Jessica Pegula of the United States stunned number one. 4th seed Elina Svitolina of Ukraine, 6-1, 6-1, in 68 minutes.

US Open finalist and No. 23 seeded Leylah Fernandez of Canada saw her run end against unranked American Shelby Rogers, who booked a quarterfinal match with Ostapenko via a thriller 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (4) at stage 1.

Aliaksandra Sasnovich beat two Grand Slam champions en route to her fourth round clash against Victoria Azarenka and charmed the crowds along the way, but she was unable to cause another upset, falling to her compatriot 6 -3, 6-4.

Previously, Paula Badosa and Barbora Krejcikova faced each other for the second time in their careers, with the Spaniard coming to the end of her meeting at the end of the afternoon. The no. The 21-seeded Spaniard won 6-1, 7-5 over No. 3 seed Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic. (ANI)
