Ceni have accepted a contract which runs until December 2022 and will be in dugout for Sao Paulo’s home match against Ceara in Brazilian Serie A on Thursday, “the club said on Twitter.
The announcement came less than three hours after Sao Paulo announced that Crespo had left by mutual agreement amid a string of poor results.
The former Inter Milan, AC Milan and Chelsea forward joined Sao Paulo on a two-year contract in February after leading Argentina Defensa y Justicia to the Copa Sudamericana title, their first international trophy .
Ceni’s last managerial role was with Flamengo, with whom he split in July, six months after leading the Rio de Janeiro side to their second straight Serie A title.
The 48-year-old also led Sao Paulo in 2017, when he led the club to 14 wins, 11 draws and 10 losses before being sacked.
Sao Paulo, six-time Serie A champion, is currently 13th in the top 20 team table with 30 points in 25 games.
