Man United Pereira shines as Flamengo keeps pressure on leaders

RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) – Manchester United’s Andreas Pereira scored from a spectacular free-kick as Flamengo won 3-1 at home against Juventude in the Brazilian Serie A championship on Wednesday .

25-year-old left keeper Douglas Friedrich doesn’t stand a chance sending a 30-meter diving effort into the upper right corner.

It was his third goal since joining Flamengo at the end of August and it was Rio de Janeiro’s first free-kick goal since 2018.

Chelsea player Kenedy gave the hosts an early lead, scoring his first goal for the club following a brace with former Fiorentina striker Pedro Santos.

The latter then scored his 14th goal of the season, scoring a first goal after the race and Michael’s dangerous cross from the left flank.

William Matheus brought home a goal for the visitors in the second half, but Juventude were powerless to prevent Flamengo from securing their 14th win in 23 appearances.

The defending Serie A champions remain second in the 20-team table with 45 points, 11 points behind Atletico Mineiro, who have played two more games.

In other games on Wednesday, Internacional won 3-1 at home against America Mineiro, Corinthians won 1-0 at home against Fluminense, Fortaleza defeated Gremio 1-0 at home, Athletico Paranaense drew 1-1 at Chapecoense and Atletico Mineiro won 3-1 at home against Santos.
