The Indian Council of Technical Education (AICTE) has asked all engineering colleges and other technical institutes to submit details of the sports infrastructure available with them, officials said. The move, which aims to make better use of sports infrastructure, comes against the backdrop of India’s improved performance at the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.
“Technical institutes can play an important role in promoting sport in India. Institutions can prepare athletes for national and international competitions which will be held in the future in light of credible performance of Indian athletes at Olympic and Paralympic Games of Tokyo in 2021, “the Colonel said. To Shreenath, Director, Office of Academic Policy and Planning, AICTE, in an official order.
“The Ministry of Education would like to discuss the issue of sports infrastructure available in Indian institutions with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and would like details of the sports infrastructure available in your institution to be provided according to the form,” he added.
Details sought from institutions include a number of playing fields, the availability of a sports complex, gymnasium or fitness center, indoor stadium, swimming pool and a yoga center. The institutes were also asked to provide details of the students studying there and those involved in the sport.
India capped their best performance at the Olympics this year with seven medals, including one gold. Also at the Paralympic Games, Indian athletes made history with the highest ever medal total of 19.
