Jason Horne-Francis almost misses out on choice due to TV outage, North Melbourne Kangaroos news

Draft night is one of the highlights of a young footballer’s career, but COVID-19 has spoiled the experience of the last two AFL draft classes.

Due to restrictions in various states, the AFL Draft was once again a virtual event for the second year in a row, and technology took its toll from the start.

While it’s no secret that North Melbourne would select South Australian prospect Jason Horne-Francis first overall, he had to wait excruciatingly due to a trade-off and TV malfunction.

While AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan announced that the Kangaroos had indeed made Horne-Francis the No.1 pick, fans couldn’t understand why there was little to no visible reaction from the youngster to him. same, who was watching from South Australia.

Horne-Francis later revealed that the television he was watching the draft on died moments before his name was read, forcing the youngster to watch the draft on his manager’s phone.

“It was a little weird,” Horne-Francis told Fox Footy of the timing.

“The TV went off and we couldn’t see much. Luckily my manager Benny connected us with his phone and I was able to watch him.”

Horne-Francis received rave reviews ahead of the draft, compared to Michael Voss and Patrick Dangerfield as North resisted commercial offers for the No.1 pick from a number of rival clubs.

He described the feeling of being drafted as “quite a special moment”.

“Definitely a lot of excitement. I can’t wait to get into things with North Melbourne Football Club,” he said.

“To the north are [heading] in the right direction and they have a lot of young midfielders and I think I can learn a lot from the players at the club.

“It’s a dream for a lot of players to make their first round debut and I hope it will for me. I feel like I’m pretty well prepared and ready for it.”
