Potential new Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick is expected to be in the Old Trafford dugout for the first time next Thursday night as Arsenal’s new host in the Premier League.

United are set to appoint the experienced German coach with a contract until the end of the current campaign with the option of an additional two-year consultant post at the club.

A slew of managers have been linked with the vacant United manager post following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking, but Rangnick is now set to fill the post for the remainder of the season.

The Red Devils face Premier League leaders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, but Rangnick’s work permit is not expected to be processed in time for him to oversee the meeting.

The German is therefore unlikely to be in a helmet for the trip to West London, but he will likely be in command of a series of matches which, on paper at least, appear to be more conducive to a good start. .

United’s clash with Arsenal begins a three-match run at Old Trafford – which will then host Crystal Palace and Young Boys in the Premier League and Champions League respectively – before a trip to relegation-threatened Norwich City.

Rangnick’s side will then face a busy Christmas schedule which includes trips to Brentford and Newcastle as well as home games against Brighton, Burnley and Wolves.

The deal for United to appoint the German is being submitted to Lokomotiv Moscow – where the German currently runs sports and development – grants Rangnick’s release, which United bosses do not see as a problem.

According to athletics, at the end of the campaign, the German will take on a consultant role, with the contract extending for two more years.

United had approached Paris Saint-Germain over Mauricio Pochettino’s availability, but United might not be able to name the Argentine midway through the season, forcing them to assess other options.

On Tuesday, Michael Carrick oversaw an impressive two-goal win for Manchester United at Villarreal to seal his place in the Champions League’s last 16.

The former central midfielder is also expected to lead United’s trip to Chelsea on Sunday, where they hope to end their streak of alarming domestic results which have only seen them gain four points in their last seven matches. .

Carrick was part of Old Trafford’s coaching staff under Solskjaer and takes charge of first-team affairs until the next management appointment is confirmed by the club.

It is not yet known whether Carrick and the other United coaches – including Mike Phelan and Kieran McKenna – will be retained under Rangnick’s regime.
