Who is Ralf Rangnick? The interim boss of Man Utd in the profiles

Manchester United have turned to Ralf Rangnick as the man they hope can revive their season with the German’s reputation at the top.

He held various roles in football for several decades and influenced some of the best coaches in football, including Thomas Tuchel.

Rangnick also has a keen eye for a player who has been fundamental in recruiting, especially at RB Leipzig.

With the German squad, he was tasked with recruiting young players before developing and reselling them for a hefty fee.

The roster of players he has signed highlights his impressive knowledge of the game.

United are expected to keep Rangnick as a consultant for two years after this season as they seek to appoint a permanent manager this summer.

Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino were signed by Ralf Rangnick earlier in his career

The insight of the 63-year-old will undoubtedly prove to be essential.

Liverpool quartet Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Naby Keita and Ibrahima Konate have all been signed by Rangnick.

Firmino joined him at Hoffenheim while the other three were signed while he was in his role with Red Bull.

Erling Haaland, a man whose future at Borussia Dortmund is uncertain, has also been signed by the German.

United have already been linked with the striker and could see their chances of signing him boosted by the arrival of Rangnick.

Chelsea’s Timo Werner and Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich were also spotted at an early age by the tactician. Both players have since moved on and won Champions League winners’ medals.

Rangnick, who started coaching in the 1980s, also helped train some of football’s elite bosses.

Tuchel, who led Chelsea to the top of Europe last season, worked under Rangnick in Stuttgart.

Julian Nagelsmann was taught by him in Hoffenheim while Marco Rose, Ralph Hassenhuttl and Jesse Marsch also benefited from the teachings of German.

United are no doubt hoping Rangnick can improve current coaches Michael Carrick, Kieran McKenna and Mike Phelan, provided they are kept.

Recruiting has also been hit or miss on Manchester’s red half for several years, although Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has brought a more measured approach to transfers.

United have targeted top players for years – and have done so again this year by adding Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane.

Rangnick’s arrival could allow the Premier League giants to add unknown young players before helping them to star status.

Erling Haaland and Joshua Kimmich were also signed by the German

The German could no doubt help transfers in his consultancy role and claimed in 2019 that he needs to be given a major role to be successful.

He told the Guardian: “I’m happy where I am, but if a club wanted to talk to me, the question should be, ‘Can I be someone who can influence the development areas of the whole club?’

“Otherwise you only get half of what I’m capable of

“If after that you can work together in a trustworthy and respectful manner, then you are more likely to be successful.”
