Jude Garcia and Krung Arbasto advance to AVC beach volleyball quarter-finals

MANILA, Philippines – Jude Garcia and Krung Arbasto of Philippines 1 advanced to the quarter-finals after surviving a close three sets against Ahmed Mahmoud and Saifeddin Elmajid of Qatar 2, 22-20, 18-21, 15-12, in the 2021 AVC Asian Senior Beach Volleyball Championships Thursday in Phuket, Thailand.

Garcia and Arbasto had already booked their places in the knockout stage after a straight set sweep from Singaporeans Kingsley Tay and Melvin Goh Teng Kuan, 26-24, 21-16, in their final prelims match.

The pair will face Iranians Bahman Salemiinjehboroun and Abolhassan Khakizadeh in the quarter-finals on Friday.

The Philippines’ women’s pairs, however, did not fare any better than in their respective final matches in the prelims.

Sisi Rondina and Bernadeth Pons, 2019 Southeast Asian Games bronze medalists, Philippines 1 lost to Japan’s Hasegawa Aiko and Sakaguchi Yurika, 21-17, 21-15, in their final match.

They clinched a 21-15, 24-22 victory over Australians Alisha Stevens and Jana Milutovinic in their opening game on Thursday to take Pool D.

Gen Eslapor and Dij Rodriguez of the Philippines 2 lost to Australians Jasmine Fleming and Stefanie Fejes, 21-18, 21-14, in their final game after beating Kazaks Alina Rachenko and Anastassiya Ukolova, 21-7, 21- 19, in their first game of the day.

Philippines 2 finished the group stage at 2-2 in Pool A but settled for third place due to the quotient.
